How pregnancy weeks are counted
Pregnancy is dated from the first day of your last menstrual period, which is about two weeks before conception. That is why a pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks in this system, even though the baby has grown for roughly 38 weeks.
Weeks are written as weeks and days. “24w 3d” means 24 weeks and 3 days. The calculator also shows your trimester and how many days remain until the estimated due date.
Trimesters at a glance
- First trimester: up to the end of week 13. Confirming the pregnancy and starting antenatal care.
- Second trimester: weeks 14 to 27. Regular check-ups and scans.
- Third trimester: from week 28. Preparing for delivery. See our hospital bag checklist.
Every pregnancy is different. Our month-by-month guide to essential check-ups explains what is usually reviewed at each stage.

Frequently asked questions
How are pregnancy weeks counted?
Doctors count from the first day of your last menstrual period, so you are usually counted as “2 weeks pregnant” around the time of conception. A full-term pregnancy is about 40 weeks.
What are the three trimesters?
The first trimester runs to the end of week 13, the second from week 14 to week 27, and the third from week 28 until birth.
Can I use my due date instead of my last period?
Yes. Choose “I know my due date” and the calculator counts back 280 days to find your pregnancy start date.
Is this the same as my ultrasound dating?
Not always. Your doctor may adjust your dates after an ultrasound. Please follow your doctor’s dating.
