Overview
What this care involves
Antenatal care, also called prenatal care, is the regular health care you receive during pregnancy. Its purpose is to keep you and your baby healthy, to pick up problems early and to prepare you for birth.
Visits commonly include checking your blood pressure and weight, blood and urine tests, ultrasound scans at the points your doctor recommends, and advice on food, rest and activity. How often you are seen depends on your health and your doctor’s advice.

Antenatal (Prenatal) Check-ups: common questions
When should my first antenatal visit be?
As early as possible once you know you are pregnant. Early visits let your doctor confirm the pregnancy, check your general health and plan your care.
How many check-ups will I need?
It depends on your health and your doctor’s advice. Pregnancies with no complications usually need fewer visits than those that need closer monitoring. Your doctor will plan the schedule with you.
Are ultrasound scans safe for my baby?
Ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation, and is widely used in pregnancy when medically advised. Your doctor will explain which scans you need and why.
What should I eat during pregnancy?
A balanced diet of vegetables, fruit, pulses, grains, dairy and enough water is a good base. Your doctor may also advise supplements such as folic acid and iron. Ask about any food you are unsure of.
Which symptoms need urgent attention?
Heavy bleeding, severe tummy pain, leaking fluid, much less baby movement, or a severe headache with vision changes should be checked at once. Call us or go to the nearest emergency service.
